New Orleans

Cable had come back to the Monteleone, which had technically reopened, though most people staying there were staff who’d been displaced from their homes. Ross himself, again in town on his NEAH per diem, had been welcomed back as a Katrina veteran by Emile, who even put him into Room 928, to which water, along with television, once more flowed.

On this early Friday afternoon, C-SPAN was covering the dedication of the Air Force One pavilion at the Reagan Library. The president, on an elevated platform with both Laura and Nancy Reagan, was paying tribute to his predecessor’s willingness to fight the Cold War, over the long haul, to a successful conclusion: Like the ideology of communism, our new enemy is dismissive of free peoples, claiming that men and women who live in liberty are weak and decadent. And like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is doomed to fail.

Ross found himself resisting the comparison, not because he judged it untruthful, but because he had only enough mental room to think of the battle for New Orleans: in the streets outside, General Russel Honoré was turning out to be a more successful version of General Casey in Baghdad, beating back the consequences of a literal flood rather than a human insurgency. Ross could no doubt add some more reflections like this one to the ever-expanding, undispatched e-mail to Allie that sat in his computer. He wondered how long it would be before a night arrived when he brought one drink too many up from the Carousel Bar—room service had not yet come back—and loss of inhibition sent his finger to the send key.

Come back to me.

When will you talk to me?

Please tell me you won’t stay over there for the birth.

I’ll agree to it. Holley is yours.
